FOTD // Getting Through a Hot Perth Day!

January 12, 2016 | , , , , , , ,
The heat in Perth, Western Australia, has been insane lately. It's averaging mid thirties/high forties almost every day and, if you're anything like me, you just cannot cope with that weather. I try to hibernate in the heat, however sometimes you've just got to get on with you life and actually leave the air-conditioned sanctuary that is your home.

On days when I am out and about I try to keep my make up to a minimum. It's not about looking glam, it's about putting the least amount of products on my face and keeping things quite natural whilst trying to absorb as much heat induced oil as possible.

To see what I create with these products on the hottest of hot days, keep reading!

Step one in any make up routine, especially on a super hot day, should always be applying some sort of sun protection. At the moment I'm loving the Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30+ as it's such a nice texture to be applied under make up, however I've used the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Extreme Fluid in the past and really liked that also!

I've been using two primers in the heat in a hope that together they'll provide somewhat decent oil control. I've been starting off by massaging the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer onto my nose, chin, forehead and the apples of my cheeks and following it up with Hourglass's Veil Mineral Primer over the whole face.

Lately I've been pulling out the Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation. The foundation has medium coverage with a really lightweight feel so I think it's perfect for these super hot days. Extra coverage is needed under my eyes so I pulled out my trusty MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. There were a few blemishes that I also spot concealed with my MAC Studio Finish Concealer (not shown) and the xoBeauty Tapered Top Synthetic Eyeshadow Brush. Like always, I finished up my concealing and correcting routine but drawing war stripes with the MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter in Light Boost under the eyes and patting it in to brighten the whole look up!

Oil control is a must in this heat so I pat the MAC Blot Pressed Powder in Light over my whole face to set my foundation and all the cream products I've just used. We don't want any shine coming through!

My body is significantly darker than my face at this time of year so I warm up the perimeters of my face with NARS' Laguna Bronzer (not shown) to even things out a bit. For me highlighter is a big no no at this time of year, my oily skin provides enough of a glow, but I do like to contour slightly. I pulled out my relatively new Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette and used Lyric, the yellow beige shade, under the eyes and a tiny amount of Sombre, the lightest and coolest contour shade, in the hollows of my cheekbones.

Normally I opt for powder blush but on this day I decided to reach for a  ColourPop Colour Shock Cheek Blush in Trickery, a pastel peach with a satin finish, as I was wearing a coral blush and I knew it'd work well.

I used a combination of Chi Chi's Brow Pomade in Taupe and Benefit's Gimme Brow in Light/Medium for these brows. I filled them in and defined their shape with the pomade and set everything in place with the brow gel afterwards!

I light to keep my lid colour quite lightweight in this weather. No one wants to faff around with a million shadows in the heat so I like to go for something brightening and comfortable without being too intensive.

I don't know about you but my eyeshadows tend to crease in the heat so I always need some kind of base, whether that be a specific eye primer or a cream shadow of some kind. Marc Jacobs' Twinkle Pop Stick Eyeshadow in On The Verge is a great base for pinky shades so I drew that all over the lid and buffed it in with a MAC 217. For a wash of shimmer and to set the shadow I went for Sin from my trusty Urban Decay Naked Palette. I then buffed Naked into the crease for soft definition and lightly ran Buck under my lower lash line. For an inner corner highlight I patted in a bit of Virgin, of course.

There are a couple of mascaras that never transfer or run on me, even in the hottest of weather conditions, so naturally those are the ones I reach for one the hottest of hot days. Benefit's They're Real! Mascara gives great upper lash definition, whilst MAC's Extended Play Gigablack Lash enhances my lower lashes without transferring - huzzah! I've mentioned it before but I really wanted the look to be brightening so I also ran MAC's Chromographic Pencil in NC15/NW20 my on my lower lash line. It just makes everything pop!

Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk is a really versatile so it was the perfect base for MAC's Pure Zen Lipstick. The combination makes a stunning peachy pink lip that's not too dissimilar from the ColourPop Colour Shock Cheek Blush we used!

BEFORE AND AFTER

All in all, I am really happy with this look and it's fast become a go to look in this heat. The look is long wearing enough to be worn through a day out but comfortable enough and it doesn't get too heavy or cakey as the day progresses!

I can't stress the importance of using sun protection enough, especially in an Australian summer, so if there's only one tip that you'll take from this post, make sure it's that!

If you have any other tips for a wearable summer make up look, make sure you share them down below!

  1. The weather here's been insane lately, I love Summer, but I'm glad it's really cooled down over the past few days (even though it rained on my freshly washed car). :@
I would have looked like a hot mess during the heatwave without my pressed powder and setting spray. Thank the beauty lords for creating such divine products. :P
