I've spoken about the benefits of cleansing oils on the blog before (here and here) but we've never talked about cleansing balms, have we? I've never really tried a cleansing oil before but I see so many bloggers and vloggers rave about them so I was super keen to try the Trilogy Make Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm* when information on the release hit my inbox.
I've been putting the product to the test for a few weeks now so, of course, it's time to tell you my thoughts!
A cleansing balm is a thick, balm/buttery like product that acts as a make up remover and and cleanser in one simple step. They're generally designed to be worked into the fingers before being massaged onto a dry face and washed away with a muslin cloth/face washer/flannel to reveal clean and make up free skin!
The Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm* claims to remove waterproof and stay-put foundation, mascara and lipstick formulas 'like nothing else'. It is said to contain a rich blend of plant oils which melt on contact with warm skin to dissolve away any traces of make up, skin impurities and 'remains of the day'.
According to my sources, the product contains a cocktail of lovely oils and butters with amazing benefits for the skin; mango seed better is an anti-inflammatory which will assist in soothing and softening the skin, coconut oil to heal and repair, rose hip oil to hydrate and restore and sunflower seed oil to deliver Vitamin E and and aid in maintain proper balance within the skin. It also contains a blend of ylang yang, freesia and cedar wood which give it it's soothing and spa like scent!
As you can see from the photos above, the Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm* also contains a organic cotton cloth to assist in rinsing the product off. The cloth is made from unbleached Turkish cotton and I think it was a great addition to the package. It's a nice texture and exactly what you need!
The texture of the Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm* is a lot thicker than I imagine. Being my first cleansing balm I didn't quite know what to expect, though I did think it would be softer and similar in texture to LUSH's Ultrabalm. It has a similar consistency to that balm, however it's a lot hard and a bit more difficult to dig the product out; the back of your nail works a treat!
To apply this product I dig a chunk out (something like a 5c-ish sized piece), rub it between my fingers and then massage it onto my dry face. Rubbing it between my fingers warms that product up a lot, meaning it becomes a little more like an oil in texture and it's a lot easier to work across the face. I massage it across my whole face, eyes included, and then use the organic cotton cloth (or a flannel if that's dirty) to rinse it off. It leaves a slight oily feeling to the skin but I always use a product like this as my first cleanse and follow it up with something like my Alpha H Balancing Cleanser so that's not an issue.
In terms of removing a full face of make up, I think I prefer a cleansing oil. It removes face make up well, however I don't think it does as good a job at breaking down my difficult to remove mascaras etc. and I don't necessarily like the idea of using two different make up removal products. If, however, I'm wearing a mascara that's easier to remove, it does a great job of removing all of my make up.
All in all, Trilogy's Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm* isn't my favourite make up removal product, however it's really nice to use and I know I'll definitely continue to reach for it on lighter make up days. It's calming on my sensitive and reactive skin and it's definitely a product I'd recommend.
