Sorry about the bad photo quality, I had to use my iPhone 'cos I'm waiting on camera parts. |
Today I did a little bit of shopping. Wait no, I did a bit of sampling! There are a bunch of products I've been looking into buying, or I've wanted for a long time, plus others I'm just not sure about. I'll tell you all what I got today then explain why. That might be the easiest.
- MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NW15 (retails for $49.00)
- MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NW25 (retails for $32.00)
- MAC Select Cover Up NC20 (retails for $32.00)
- Stila Smudge Pot in Kitten (retails for $42.00)
- Stila Prime Pot in Taffy (retails for $42.00)
- NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Santa Fe (retails for $99.00)
Basically I went on a massive shop without buying a thing! I know I only got a small amount of each product but that's $296.00 worth there!
Firstly, I went to both MAC stores in the city. Initially I was looking for a new blemish concealer. The first MAC I went to recommended Select Cover Up and colour matched me to NC20 after I said that's what I was in Studio Fix Fluid. However, when I went to the other MAC the assistant was extremely surprised to find I was colour matched to be an NC20 on more than one occasion. I explained that I found that NC20 was too yellow for my skin she said that NC shades were all wrong for me and I'm actually an NW. Thanks, guys!! Anyway, she matched me to the above NW shades and I can't wait to try them out. I just wish I'd known BEFORE I bought the Studio Fix Fluid. For my MAC Studio Fix Fluid review, click here - Now that I've been properly colour matched this may change though!
After that I went to a store called Mecca Cosmetics. I love this place! I go in there all the time but I'm always too chicken to actually ask for advice. Mecca Cosmetics stock a bunch of awesome brands including some that I've never seen sold elsewhere in Australia. They have NARS, Stila, Khiels and Kores just to name a few (according to their website, they stock around 40 brands but I only looked at some in store today). First off, I was looking at Stila's Smudge Pot in Kitten. I have wanted this for the LONGEST time but, as with most products I buy, I can't justify spending that much without trying it first. The make up artist serving me was super lovely and asked if I'd like to sample anything else while I was there, so I did! I got a sample of the Prime Pot eye primer so I could add another review to my eyeshadow primer post. I also got a sample of the NARS Sheer Glow foundation just because I could, to be honest. No, it was partly that but I also wanted to try out some NARS products. They look super dooper fancy!
That's all the make up products I got today, ladies and gents. Tomorrow, when the sun's out, I'll upload a swatch of everything. You can also look forward to some awesome new reviews of all these products soon (I'm thinking a MAC concealer comparison, thoughts?).
After all that there was one thing I still really wanted to buy today. Yes, buy. I wasn't going to be a stinge this time. I'm not sure how much you guys know about Lush, but I love them. For those of you that don't know much about Lush, it's a cosmetics company that sells and produces handmade natural face makes, soaps, bubble bars, bath bombs, hair products and more. Anyway, while I was away I read a number of gossip magazines and many featured Lush's Toothy Tabs. These are solid toothpaste tablets that just need water to work. They sound kind of weird but I just wanted to try them! They sound just weird enough to be super cool.
I bought two packets of these super cool toothy tabs and I'd love to give one packet away. If you want to win, leave a comment telling me about a time when you bought the wrong make up product because you didn't sample it! My favourite answer will win. If that's never happened to you, tell me about your biggest ever make up fail! Were you ever matched to the wrong colour?!

Always look your best,

Ooh yeah, I have white white skin as you know, and even with sampling I find bases are hit-and-miss. I tend to just grab the lightest shade that anyone makes and go with it. HOWEVER - I bought the lightest Bobbi Brown foundation shade while in the US and it is ACTUALLY white - as in even I look like a ghost while wearing it. Who ever knew there were people whiter than me out there?! :P
ReplyDeletehave to be the blue eys shadow I wore in the eighties yes I am really old, it was a big trend in the seventies thought I could bring into the eighties, wrong, last time I wore it I was told by someone I reminded them of a pool cue (ouch) thankfully can look back and laugh now
ReplyDeleteI was going out to a concert so I tried out the Sally Hansen dry nail polish strips, they were sparkly and blue and amazing!
ReplyDeleteA week later when they were starting to look a bit second hand I thought I'd use the half hour I had before work to take them off. I tried so hard to get 1 nail off and it was failing miserably, the colour was coming off and the glitter was sticking like its life depended on it. I had to leave for work so I threw on over the top a haphazard coat of the most solid/opaque colour I had (which just so happened to be fluoro pink).
so I went to work with these gross pink, lumpy, awful looking nails and hid my hands all morning until I could go over to the shops at lunch and pay the nail salon to take it off.
It was a pretty embarrassing morning as a number of my colleagues noticed how horrible my nails looked :P
I bought Estee Lauder double wear foundation and had it put on me in the shop and thought it looked really great. The lighting in the shop made it look like a perfect match, later i realised it was way WAY to dark for my skin tone, and when comparing it to my previous foundation that was the right colour (but didnt sit as well which is why i was getting a new one) it was way darker. Not sure how I thought it looked good in the shop! probably their darn lighting, makes everything look amazing.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophie!! Bulk enjoyed your blog! I didn't even know you could get samples that's cool!! As you know I'm not a big make-up wearer but your request made me think of this one time I tried to dress up and look pretty and wear this gorgeous mulberry shade of lipstick and at lunch whilst eating I managed to smear it all around my mouth and over my cheeks I looked REAL attractive then!! xo :D
ReplyDeleteI thought MAC Mineralize Medium Deep would be a good match for me in summer as my skin has a tendency to tan a huge amount. So I brought it from the MAC website during some sale (it's a loooong drive to the nearest MAC counter from where I live). It's a great product and looks natural and normal in summer but in winter it makes me look like a giant jaffa :/
